Welcome to Download Monkey. News, reviews, forums - in fact everything you need to know about bananas video on demand.

FINALLY some science to make sense of what we're all seeing in HD

Come on. We've all seen it. You know it's true

With more HD around - from Blu ray, Sky, Virgin, Apple - we're all starting to watch more and more HD shows and movies 0 on DVD, cable or dish TV and downloaded.

But that fact is that all HD is not created equal.

To these eyes, the quality of HD sources we've used runs to a list that looks something like this:

1. Blu ray DVD
2. Sky+HD
3. Virgin
4. Apple
5. Xbox Live

Bitrate seems to be the key here and the team over at Gizmodo have had a good look around and written a solid piece all about it.

It's well worth a read if you are in the least bit interested in why your HD mileage seems to vary...

Sky, Virgin And Joost Get Jumpy Over Kangaroo (Sorry)

BSkyB, Virgin and online only service Joost have submitted a complaint to the Office of Fair Trading over the proposed  video service kangaroo (hang on, isn't this called SeeSaw now?) Mike Volpi, chief executive of Joost had this to say on the matter...

"When you have a situation where so much good content ends up being potentially exclusive through a single distribution channel, it makes it very difficult for any player outside of those three to be competitive in the UK market."

Is Kangaroo doomed? Is it vaporware? Or will it be a storming success? Who knows...

BBC iPlayer vs Sky Player vs 4OD vs (snigger) ITV.com

There's a very interesting pice on the iPlayer in today's Media Guardian by the paper's former TV critic Gareth McLean. It's well worth a read in full.

And he's right - the iPlayer is changing the way that we all watch, consume and enjoy TV - and not just BBC programmes either.

While Sky Player, 4OD and (snigger) ITV.com are in competition with the iPlayer, they are also benefitting from the huge marketing muscle that was put behind the launch of the iPlayer (ok, the third launch of the iPlayer - but then nothng really works until version 3 anyway...). Every single BBC show on every BBC channel had an iPlayer promo. Perhaps someone who's a media buyer could put a value on that advertising for us - I certainly can't even begin to.

funny pictures

What the BBC has done in launching the iPlayer is shift the public consciousness. TV on demand, on a computer, in bed on a laptop, on the train on my iPod is now easy, convenient and fun (and not difficult, techie and hard). This is VoD for all of us however we chose to live our lives.

Gareth asks what's next for the iPlayer. The question should really be, what's next for the market that the iPlayer has created? And because here at Download Monkey we always like to come up with the answers to the questions you're asking, and while we already have reviews of the major VoD services, we're currently busy doing a head to head of the big key VoD players. We'll be looking mainly at the the things that we think now matter - ease of use, quality of picture and content available.

We'll try and make it as easy as possible to see at a glance which service it's right for you - ie: should you be spending any of your precious time even bothering with it? Because Gareth, that's where we go next with this. Mainstream...

Sky Player - Top Content Streaming From Today

They've changed the name and the pretty login animation, but today's the day that the most popular content available on Sky Player should (our italics) become available.

This is the big change for the service. This is what turns Sky Anytime into iPlayer for Sky content. Fast streaming for the "I WANT IT NOW" crowd and better quality downloads for the "I WANT IT GORGEOUS" mob.

One major difference are also the simulcast News and Sports Channels. It will be interesting to see just how popular these are online.

To be honest, here at Donwload Monkey we're just looking forward to be able to scrub through to our favourite bits of our favourite movies and watch them over and over again.

We'll have a good play with the service and update the review as soon as we can.

You can always add your thoughts in the Sky Player forum. Go on, don't be shy...

VoD and Sky+ Drive Next Generation TV

A new survey has for the first time exposed the huge growth in popularity of on-demand TV and Internet video.

In a survey of UK  2168 online adults the research showed that more than half of UK residents (57%) watch up to 10 hours or more of on-demand TV or recorded TV each week. This is TV that either supplements or replaces broadcast TV viewing.

The same survey also found that women watched more on-demand or recorded TV than men (58% vs. 55%). Seniors (55+) and young adults (18-24) watched the most on-demand or recorded TV (60%); 25-34 year-olds watched the least (51%).

The most common methods for recording programmes in the UK were Sky+ (22%), personal video recorders, and VHS machines (27%).

On demand services are also used for later recorded viewing. 11% use On demand TV services, whilst 16% use internet catch up services, such as the BBC iPlayer.

The survey, carried out by YouGov looked at the changing habits of TV viewers across the UK. The survey also examined today's consumer habits across different media platforms and devices including TVs, PCs and mobile phones.

The primary findings of the survey were:

More than half (57%) of all UK residents 'time-shift' their TV viewing, using on-demand TV services or recording live television for viewing later.
Of the 57% who time-shift content, about one-third watch at least three hours of on-demand TV per week.
About half of online UK residents (48%) have watched video or TV on the Internet, with the vast majority using Internet-based TV services for on-demand viewing (70%).
Of that 48%, 22% have watched Internet TV or video over the past 7 days.

The survey also found that Internet TV and video are quickly becoming established as regular channels for consuming video content, changing the viewing habits and experience for a new generation of viewers.

Of those who have watched Internet TV or video, the survey found that:
They expressed a clear preference for better Internet video content (56%),
Better Internet TV quality (47%), and
The desire to watch more Internet video on TV rather than the computer (38 percent).
Most people watch Internet TV or video in their home office or study (68%), followed by a communal room at home (39%) and then at work (20%).

The biggest drivers which would encourage more people to watch Internet TV or video are:
More free content available (56%),
Quality of picture (47%) and
The ability to watch Internet video on a TV screen, rather than a computer (38%).

In terms of content:
News (24%)
Entertainment (27%) and
Short videos (42%)
are the most popular type of content to watch on computer rather than on TV.
Just 9% of people use their mobile phone or PDA to watch Internet TV or video.

DownloadMonkey Exclusive: Anytime PC Rebranded SkyPlayer

Sky TV have rebranded the company's Anytime PC service as SkyPlayer.

Video streaming - as well as the current downloading - is now available following an overnight upgrade.

It means users will be able to start watching content almost instantly, rather than waiting for the whole show or movie to download.

It puts the satellite broadcasters servce on a par with the BBC iPlayer that also offers both streaming and download options.

In the past, Sky Anytime - then called Sky By Broadband - was plagued by account management and login problems but these have largely disappeared and it was given the thumbs up as one of the better quality download services currently available by DownloadMonkey testers in a recent review.

PSP Plus Sky Equals Download Service

"This summer, PlayStation and Sky will launch Go!View, the first official PlayStation Portable video download service in Europe. Go!View will provide a wealth of programming from the worlds of entertainment, comedy, sport and movies for PSP owners to enjoy in addition to their usual gaming experience," says Sony.

So the PSP is to become a download service. But will this work? The Nintendo DS, the PSPs only real competitor is a pure game system and has been destroying the PSP in terms of sales since day one, despite the PSP's ability to play movies. Will diversifying the PSP into a multimedia system give it the edge over the DS? This will depend on the quality of the service. Sky have a great reputation of delivering the some of the best content, so things look bright.

Download TV is coming to every piece of technology with a screen. There is no escape!

James Murdoch Vs. iPlayer.

James, son of 'billionaire tyrant' Rupert Murdoch and former head of Sky has blasted the BBCs iPlayer service saying it is “squashing a lot of competitors...I’m not saying it is a bad product, but I am saying it does crowd out competition and innovation."

Our opinion? The other companies involved in putting content on the web have access to the same technology as the Beeb, it's just that they haven't done as good a job as the BBC. OK, so the BBC doesn't need advertising, but 4oD does, and that is on a par with the iPlayer.
