Internet TV streaming application Zattoo has added BBC One, BBC Two and ITV to its channel lineup.
They join 23 services including Channel 4, Five, BBC Three and BBC Four. Zattoo, officially launched in the UK in December. Last week it attracted attention media reports said major broadcasters were furious about the service and were consulting m'learned friends. The service streams the channels over the internet as they are broadcast using a peer-to-peer technology. It allows users to watch live TV without at TV (and argueably a TV licence...). The company has always insisted it's an entirely legal enterprise and ensures all programme rights are cleared. A spokesman for Zattoo UK said broadcasting and copyright legislation here means public service channels can be rebroadcast without the agreement of operators. The BBC also has its own policy on syndication. Channel 4 and the BBC have said they have no formal agreement with Zattoo. The BBC is currently reviewing its policy in the area. |
